Some people say Avril Lavigne, beloved pop-punk princess of the early 2000s, died tragically in 2003 and was replaced by a body double named Melissa. Why? Because apparently the most efficient way to keep selling CDs was not to justโฆ record new ones, but to hire a decoy who could replicate Avrilโs eyeliner choices and brood convincingly in Hot Topic. Makes perfect sense.
The โevidenceโ is everywhere, according to the internetโs most caffeinated detectives: her face looks slightly different in certain photos, her lyrics shifted from angst-ridden to a little more bubblegum, andโgasp!โshe sometimes smiles now. Clearly, no human being could possibly change over time. Nope. Only Melissa, a Canadian clone fresh out of the lab, could pull that off.
Of course, Avril herself has denied the theory, which is exactly what Melissa would say if she was covering up a body-snatching plot. After all, if you had been secretly impersonating someone for two decades, would you come clean right before a world tour? Didnโt think so. Whether Avril is real, fake, or a shape-shifting reptilian in disguise, one thing is certain: โComplicatedโ just got a whole lot more complicated.
